Jim Moynagh started his full-time professional bass fishing career in the summer of 1995. Since then, he has competed in bass tournaments in virtually every type of fishery ranging all over the U.S. and Canada. This diverse background includes such fisheries as: Lake Mead, NV, Mississippi River Delta, LA, Lake Champlain, NY, Lake Okeechobee, FL, Kentucky Lake, KY/TN, the Great Lakes, Table Rock Lake, MO, Sam Rayburn Lake, TX, the Potomac River, MD and many, many more. His favorite place to fish for bass is Rainy Lake on the border of MN and ONT, CA. Here, three times he has won the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship along with his long-time, team-tournament partner Joe Thrun. Rainy Lake also is the home to Jim's favorite bass the smallmouth. The unpredictability and sometimes fierce aggressiveness of smallmouths keeps Jim wanting more and more of them.
The largest 5-fish limit that Jim ever weighed in a tournament totaled 25.05 pounds being caught on Lake Minnetonka, MN, Jim's home tournament lake. This catch occurred during the 1995 Don Shelby U.S. Invitational which he went on to win with a total of nearly 69 pounds for three days. Other major finishes in Jim's career include 1st at the 1997 FLW Forrest Wood Open on Lake Minnetonka; 2nd at the 1998 FLW Forrest Wood Open on the Connecticut River, CT; 3rd at the 2002 FLW Forrest Wood Open on Lake Champlain; 2nd at the 2006 FLW Tour event at Pickwick Lake.
In 2006, Jim almost accomplished a rare feat achieving Angler-of-the-Year status in two different tournament circuits. He managed to capture the title in the Chevrolet Silverado Pro-Am Bass Tour, while just missing on the FLW Tour with a 3rd place in the points.
Jim's most productive tournament strategy is probing structure with a Jim Moynagh's Football Jig. For here rests the reason for Jim's allegiance to Vexilar. Even more important than the jig when probing structure is the sonar mounted on your boat, he states. That's why I utilize the best equipment on the market.
When Jim's not chasing bass, he likes to try his luck with muskies. Topwater musky fishing is one to the biggest thrills in freshwater fishing! he exclaims. Try it under the cloak of darkness, and you're in for even more of a special treat! Nothing's cooler than hearing that surface explosion interrupt the quaint peacefulness of a mid-summer night! His musky pursuits have mostly been limited to Minnesota lakes, but there have been a few rare trips to waters in Ontario as well.
Jim is an expert fisherman in his field and region. He'd be happy to help if you have any questions about using Vexilar products within his area of expertise.
